Soilfood has been refining products from Metsä Board’s side streams since 2016

Our collaboration covers the utilisation of side streams from several mills across the Nordics. “Our target is that by 2030, none of our mills’ processes will generate landfill waste. Already today, more than 97% of our side streams are recovered either as materials or as energy. Metsä Board wants to focus on its core expertise as a producer of premium fresh fibre paperboard, while at the same time seeking to make even more comprehensive use of circular economy opportunities. That is why partners like Soilfood are so important to us.” says Environmental Director Mika Leino.

At Finnamyl each and every part of the potato is put to use

Since the beginning of 2018, Soilfood has been responsible for fertilizer sales, logistics, distribution and advising farmers, thus allowing Finnamyl Ltd. to focus on the production and processing of starch potatoes. The importance of recycling domestic nutrients is now more timely than ever. Finnamyl’s model, in which the raw material is fully utilized and the side stream nutrients are recycled for agricultural use, is an exemplary approach. “At the plant, we put every part of the potato to use: the starch, fibers, proteins, and even the water found in potatoes. Farmers use this nutrient-rich side stream as fertilizer,” explains Kimmo Pusa, Farming Manager.
